- Lenses and reality: How was the closing of the 47th Moscow International Film Festival?

The 47th Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) ended in the capital on April 24. During the week, more than 200 films from 50 countries were presented at its venues. 13 paintings participated in the main competition, three of which are domestic. The jury members chose the winner unanimously. The ceremony was remembered for the tears of the laureates and the witty jokes of the festival president, and the red carpet was marked by bright performances. Everything is in the Izvestia report.
The stars of the MIFF Red carpet
The 47th Moscow International Film Festival in numbers includes more than 200 films from 50 countries, 333 screenings in 25 halls in Moscow, more than 40,000 spectators, eight thousand accredited people, half of whom are guests, and more than two thousand media outlets. The culmination of this great celebration of cinema is honoring the best.
Traditionally, the closing ceremony was preceded by a red carpet, spread out on the steps leading to the Rossiya Theater on Pushkin Square. One of the first to appear was actress Olga Artemyeva in a white pantsuit with a layered asymmetrical jacket.
— I was at the presentation of a short film — young directors have a sensitive sense of time. It makes me happy," she told reporters.
Irina Bezrukova also appeared on the white side. She chose a white dress with a full skirt for going out and threw a jacket over it. Actress Ekaterina Guseva wore a shimmering black floor-length dress. She admitted that she did not have time to get acquainted with the program during the week of cinema and plans to catch up today.
— Unfortunately, this is my first time at the 47th festival. I am very busy preparing for May 9th, the Great Victory Day. But still, this festival is my favorite, the only one, and a large—scale one, so I couldn't miss it today," the actress told Izvestia.
Alexey Chadov did not linger on the red carpet — he took a few photos and quickly ran past journalists eager to ask a question. He was in a hurry for a reason — the actor had to conduct a solemn ceremony, but in the image he allowed himself a little hooliganism in the form of an untethered butterfly hanging loosely around his neck.
Anna Snatkina wore a white top with black trousers, and a spectacular voluminous cape over it. Singer Julia Parshuta appeared in a dress embroidered with stones. Her colleague in the creative workshop, Sevil, was wearing a narrow floor—length corset dress, which even seemed difficult for her to move around in.
Actress Alexandra Kiselyova comfortably solved the issue by changing outfits one by one. First, she appeared in a dress and balaclava by Valentin Yudashkin from the archive of 2019.
— He was inspired by the artists of the 17th century. It's all handmade. I support the philosophy of the film "Firebird", which is currently being released, and in this image you can see a mysterious bird. Where, if not at the closing, to arrange a performance and do something bright and shocking," she told Izvestia.
This is not Sasha's first performance during the 47th MIFF. The high—profile event of the show was the out-of-competition screening of another work by Roman Mikhailov, "Journey to the Sun and Back" with her participation. As part of the promo, she staged a dance show on Arbat in the company of Mark Eidelstein and Lyubov Aksenova. This, of course, caused delight among passers-by. The audience has no less interest in the project itself.
— We showed all seven episodes in one day, which is 333 minutes. When the last episode ended, all the viewers stood up and applauded for ten minutes. I'm not exaggerating! It was like we were in Cannes, where there is such a tradition," Alexandra Kiselyova told Izvestia.
When the red carpet was nearing completion, the journalists again noticed the actress heading towards them, but in a different image.
— Am I imagining things, or is it Kiselyova? "What is it?" someone asked.
The actress changed her outfit to another one, also from Yudashkin — blue trousers, a corset, a cape and leather gloves.
"This will make it more convenient for me to sit in the hall and watch the closing ceremony," the actress said, and then proved the convenience of the costume by making a drop (a Vogue-style dance move with a fall).
One of the main themes of the 47th Moscow Festival was the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. It is no coincidence that the historical film "Not on the list" with Vladimir Mashkov became the opening film. The plot is dedicated to the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress in 1941.
The main competition included 13 paintings, three of them Russian. Stasia Tolstaya reinterpreted the classic "Family Happiness" by Leo Tolstoy. In the story, a young girl falls in love with her guardian after losing her parents. The director of "The Blockade Diary", which won the main prize at the 42nd Moscow International Film Festival, Andrey Zaitsev presented a melodrama about an elderly couple of St. Petersburg intellectuals. And Mikhail Arkhipov — the fantastic story "Planet" with Sergey Gilev in the role of a director shooting a picture about space.
Special interest was focused on the "Russian Premieres" section, where participants and viewers were the first to see the main novelties of the season before the release. The competition included seven films. On April 21, Alexander Petrov personally presented the drama "The Postman" at the Khudozhestvenny, where he played the role of a blessed postman in the Soviet rear. His character tries to protect local women who have sent their husbands and sons to the front from bad news and decides to replace real letters with fake ones written in his own hand. Victoria's wife supported the actor at the premiere — the couple recently became parents.
The next day, Irina Starshenbaum and Peter Fedorov presented a romantic road movie "There" about two completely different people who embark on a long journey. He's a taxi driver, she's a passenger.
A few days earlier, Yulia Peresild and Vladimir Vdovichenkov presented a melodrama inspired by Soviet cinema, "Hello to My Husband." The heroine has to make a difficult choice between her husband in a coma, to whom she has been faithful for many years, and a new acquaintance who is drastically changing her life.
Another participant in the "Russian Premieres" is Ural director Ivan Sosnin, whose "Alien" was in the main competition at the last MIFF. His new work, "Legends of Our Ancestors," tells the story of a reporter from Yekaterinburg who, after working in a village lost in the taiga, begins to hear and see an ancient spirit. Starring Alexander Yatsenko.
— I was childishly glad that for the second year in a row I got to one of the most important festivals in our country. It's very important to me, it's an honor. I really like festivals. I have such a sporting interest. I'm always worried, clenching my fingers, sweating my palms. I'm going to worry a lot now, too, sitting in the auditorium. This is the excitement without which it is impossible to make a movie. It spurs me on and makes me think about new films. We started writing the script for "Legends of Our Ancestors" a few years ago, when my daughter was born. I wanted to do something that could be shown to her when she grows up, to tell her about her roots, about her native Urals, about the legends and myths that live there," Ivan Sosnin told Izvestia.
Winners of the 47th MIFF
The ceremony started without any unnecessary preludes — immediately after the announcement of the laureates. The best film of the short film competition was "Dance of the Bee" from Spain. The prize was awarded to director Von Cortiso. "Auntie Hu and her Garden of Eden" from China, directed by Pan Zhiqi, was named the best documentary film of the 47th Moscow International Film Festival. In his beautiful speech, he paid tribute to Soviet cinema.
— When my heroine faced her son's questions about life and death, about the meaning of life, she used Pavel Korchagin's story to inspire him. Whether it's the seriously ill but strong-willed Pavel Korchagin, or the kind-hearted Ms. Hu in my film, or the happiness-seeking Katerina from Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears, from fiction to documentaries, personalities, the spiritual world, the feelings of these characters are similar. They can cross the borders of countries, influence our lives, and continue to shine on us, making us bolder and more fearless in the face of difficulties," Pan Zhiqi said from the stage.
Anton Maslov's work "Hello to my Husband" became the winner of the Russian Premieres competition.
— Just do everything that your wife tells you, and you will get to the MIFF, — said the director, receiving an award for the film, the script for which was written by his wife.
The statuettes were then presented to the winners of the main competition. Spanish actress Maria Rodriguez Soto was awarded for the best performance of a female role for her work in the film "House on Fire". Evgeny Tsyganov received a similar award among men for the film "Family Happiness". The special prize of the jury went to the film from Kazakhstan "Evacuation" directed by Farkhat Sharipov.
"A special prize is awarded to a film that very cinematically shows that humanism overcomes all the horrors of war,— announced Mariana Spivak.
The award ceremony was one of the most emotional. Together with the director, the team took the stage. Actress Natalia Witmer burst into tears, approaching the microphone.
— I'm like in a dream! It's such a feeling.… Wow! I don't believe it! Is this all true? We've been waiting for this, the whole band. Thank you all! Kazakhstan thank you! The best country! The best people! Thank you Russia! You are the best too! — she spoke into the microphone, choking on tears.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prize for the best film of the main competition. The winner of the 47th Moscow International Festival was "Elysium" from India.
— The actress of the movie "Evacuation" just said that she felt like she was in a dream. It's like I'm in a dream too, and I don't want to wake up! Thank you Moscow, thank you to the distinguished members of the jury. The selection of films was very strong, and it is a great honor for me to win this nomination! Pradeep Kurba, the director of the film, said from the stage in a voice trembling with excitement.
The work from India became a triumph of the 47th Moscow International Film Festival. The film won another statuette for best director.
— I'll probably have to ask the organizers to help with the extra luggage. I need another place," Pradeep Kurba joked.
The jury members made the decision unanimously.
— This is a film of extraordinary purity. They haven't made a movie like this for 20 years. He is completely devoid of these fashionable empty narratives. It is masterfully made. And it was made by a man who absolutely does not think about the success of the festival. This is a great poetic strange saying. This is what cinema was like many years ago. This is a very serious movie. I didn't think this would happen at the MIFF," Alexey German, who joined the jury of the main competition this year, told Izvestia before the ceremony.
The last award of the 47th festival was presented for his contribution to world cinema — it was received by Vladimir Ilyin. The audience gave the laureate a standing ovation.
The Moscow Festival has its own long-standing traditions. One of them is the presentation of a crossing chain with the image of St. George as a symbol of power to the chairman of the jury of the main competition. This year, the honor fell to the Spanish director Luis Mignarro. After the announcement of all the results, he returned it to Nikita Mikhalkov, the president of the festival.
"I came here before customs came to take this jewel from you,— Mikhalkov said.
"Now that they've taken that chain off me, I feel like I'm naked," Luis Magnaro replied.
— Sheremetyevo is better without this chain. There may be others who will wear it," Nikita Mikhalkov made the audience laugh.
The festival was concluded by its president with the traditional blow of a cinematic firecracker. The closing film was the Argentine drama "Who would We Like to Be" directed by Alejandro Agresti. The plot centers on a man and a woman who have been meeting every week in the same bar for many years to talk about who they would like to become if reality did not prevent it.
