Choice instead: Central Bank opens voting for symbols for the new thousand-dollar bill

The Central Bank announced the start of the popular vote on the choice of objects for the reverse side of the modernized RUB 1,000 banknote. The short list includes 25 symbols of the Volga Region. "Banknote" plebiscite will begin at 10 a.m. on November 29 and will last until December 12, when the results will be summed up. "Izvestia" also launches the next stage of our project "New banknotes " - for the first time it was held in 2021, when we chose landmarks for 5 thousand and 1 thousand. Already on November 28, we opened in social networks voting, which will last until December 5. As the results of previous polls showed, the choice of readers turned out to be very providential. This time, after several hours of voting, the Museum and Exhibition Center "Samara Space" is the leader among the objects.
Why the Central Bank decided to redesign the reverse side of the Br1 thousand bill
The fate of the updated 1,000-ruble bill was not easy. Last fall, it was solemnly presented by the Central Bank, and a couple of days later it was withdrawn, because the image on the back side caused a great public outcry. The former Christian church, located on the territory of the Kazan Kremlin, had no cross, and the Muslim tower was crowned with a crescent moon.
Modernized banknotes of 1 thousand and 5 thousand rubles were put into circulation by the Central Bank on October 16, 2023. But while the five-thousand dollar bill, dedicated to the Urals Federal District, did not cause any discussions, there were fierce disputes around the one-thousand dollar bill. On its reverse side was located the palace church in the Kazan Kremlin built in the XVII century, which now houses the Museum of the History of Statehood of the Tatar People and the Republic of Tatarstan. Moreover, the building has been used for secular purposes since the beginning of Soviet times, when the cross was removed from the former church. In the design of the thousand-dollar bill, the building is the same - without the cross. At the same time, the tower of Syuyumbike with a crescent moon is depicted next to it, which caused a flurry of criticism of the Central Bank by Orthodox activists.
It took the regulator almost a year to think, during which it came to the conclusion that it's necessary not to correct the existing image on the back of Br1 thousand, but, as noted by the head of the Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina, to take a step back and develop a new design. Since, she explained, the symbols should unite, not cause disputes. Also because of the ambiguous reaction in society to the previous design, which was recognized by the Chairman of the Central Bank, decided to abandon the image on the banknotes of religious buildings.
Interestingly, a year ago, after the Central Bank withdrew the updated banknote from circulation, Izvestia conducted a vote within the framework of the project "New banknotes" on how readers see the way out of the situation. The most common answer, chosen by the overwhelming majority (over 60%) of poll participants, is to avoid images of religious buildings on banknotes.
Also now the Central Bank in choosing objects for the back side of the modernized thousand decided to resort to popular vote (the same scheme is planned to work on the remaining three bills, which are scheduled for modernization - denominations of 500, 50 and 10 rubles).
What objects of the Volga District of the Central Bank nominated for voting
November 28, the regulator at a meeting of the Advisory Council on banknotes presented 25 symbols of the Volga region, which were included in the short list for popular vote. They were selected from 40 objects proposed by the participants of the expert groups in the Volga region.
Among the symbols submitted for voting: the monument to Salavat Yulaev in Ufa, the building of the Vyatka Art Museum in Kirov, the main building of Kazan Federal University, the Zhigulevskaya HPP on the Volga River in the Samara region, the Museum and Exhibition Center "Samara Space", the Monument to the Protecting Mother in Cheboksary, the Monument of Glory in Samara, the Museum of History of Orenburg, several museum-estates, which are associated with Pushkin, Tchaikovsky, the Family Center in Kazan, etc.д.
During the meeting of the Advisory Board, its participants put forward a proposal to shorten the list for voting, as many objects raised doubts in their minds. For example, several typical estates that lack recognizability. Even the famous one in Boldino, which is forever linked to the name of the great Alexander Pushkin, is not much different from many others across the country. Criticism was also voiced against, to put it mildly, not too outstanding in architectural terms. But the point in the debate was put by Elvira Nabiullina, who suggested that the final choice should be made by the citizens.
How and when it will be possible to vote for the object for the renewed thousand
Voting will begin at 10:00 on November 29 and will end on December 12, when the results will be summarized. Only one object can be chosen (this will be tracked by IP address). But this does not mean that on the back of the banknote will be painted one symbol. As explained by Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Sergei Belov, three groups of images are mainly used: the first plan, for which objects should be recognizable and set the theme, the second plan (support the main theme, complement it and create a common background) and the third (micro patterns, microdrawings). The final design of banknotes will be approved by the Board of Directors of the Bank of Russia, the target date for the presentation of the new banknote is the second half of 2025, said Sergei Belov.
"Izvestia" asked three participants of the meeting about the object on which their choice would fall. They said that the most obvious one is the Salavat Yulaev monument in Ufa.
- For all my love of architecture, I would choose the Salavat Yulaev monument," said Dmitry Mordvintsev, Professor of the Department of Communicative Design at the Russian State University of Art and Industry named after S.G. Stroganov.
Collectively, it is recognizability, historical value, and the artistry of the image. The Stroganovka professor also singled out the Saratov Conservatory and the Museum of History in Orenburg.
And photographer Vladimir Klavikho-Telepnev, who also gave leadership to the monument to Salavat Yulaev, noted the beauty and Russian style of the building of the Samara Academic Theater named after Gorky. Arseny Meshcheryakov, head of the School of Design at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, who supported his colleagues, still advised to think about using the image of Alexander Pushkin for the back of the thousand-dollar bill. Of course, the Boldino museum-estate is quite typical. But, according to the representative of Vyshka, it would be possible to make a collage with the face of the great poet.
"Izvestia" did not wait for the beginning of the official voting and launched its own, alternative for our readers already on November 28, as soon as the short-list with symbols appeared. The poll will be held until December 5 inclusive in the social networks of our publication. According to the results of several hours of voting on Thursday among the readers of Izvestia, the Museum and Exhibition Center "Samara Space" is the leader so far.
